The
story:
Six
students are about to find out their teachers really are
from another planet.
Herrington
High, Ohio, a small-town high school All of a sudden, the
teachers start changing attitude. When Casey (Elijah Wood)
and Delilah (Jordana Brewster) have to hide in a closet
in the teacher's lounge, they witness the strangulation
of Nurse Harper (Salma Hayek) by Coach Willis (Robert Patrick)
. Shocked, they manage to flee. Only moments later, the
nurse seems to be very alive, but also somehow changed,
like all the teachers and most of the students. Only Casey,
Delilah and four others seem to be suspicious. Proof of
an alien infection is finally brought by the chemistry teacher,
who also points out a way to kill the infected humans. The
plan now is to get the queen, before the aliens can spread
out over the whole country. and rule the world !
The
summary:
Despite
seemingly falling into oblivion after From Dusk till Dawn,
Robert Rodriguez picked an odd teen film to continue his
until then impressive career. Mixing his love of cheap horror
and cool camera angles this is essentially a teen slasher
movie with aliens instead of the proverbial slasher terrorising
a school. It appears to be an attempt to combine two well
established genres in order to guarantee its success. It
falls far short of its ambitions.
Rodriguez
directs with his usual vigour all the time keeping it well
paced and never allowing the movie to meander from its main
plot. Unfortunately the main problem with the film is not
that it is badly made or presented, its just that you feel
like you have seen it all before. The cast of the movie
are all solid and do a good job in their respective roles.
Worthy of a mention are Elijah Wood and Josh Hartnett as
two of the teens who find out that their teachers really
are from another plant. The film does have some genuinely
good excitement but sadly degenerates at the end to some
sort of Alien-esque tribute. Overall a slightly average
to below average horror that will be a worthy rental for
a Friday night film session but will ultimately be struck
from your mind very quickly.
The
DVD is A Dimension release in a keep case. The sound and
picture quality do lift this slightly but the extra's are
completely missing and all we get is a measly trailer and
film recommendations.
