The story:

What you can't have, you can't resist.

A modern day remake of the classic "Dangerous Liaisons" the story is of two half-siblings: the sultry yet manipulative Kathryn (Gellar) and the smooth-talking Sebastian (Philippe). The plot revolves around the relationship between brother and sister who together plot to seduce and manipulate their way through their unwitting prep-school classmates. A sizzling game of cat and mouse that no-one will escape. Things come to a head as Kathryn poses the ultimate challenge to her brother: deflower the Headmasters virgin daughter Annette (Witherspoon). If he fails, Kathryn gets his most prizes possession - his beloved sports car. If he succeeds, he gets to possess and bed Kathryn. It's a challenge he cannot refuse..

Although not original in story, Cruel Intentions is well enough made to takes on a nineties 'period' style all of it's own. It is set in the glamorous lavish surroundings of East Coast America in a fascinating life, where money means nothing and conscience and morals have no place.

The summary:

A better than average film with promising young cast. The film seems to be geared towards the younger end of the market but surprisingly good acting nonetheless. Supremely stylish cinematography with a thumping British indie soundtrack. What really makes this an essential purchase is the DVD package. The extras including commentary, featurettes and deleted scenes and they complement the movie perfectly. If you're not into the teen-flick type cast (I know what you did last summer, Scream etc) then you may be put off but they really do show talent especially Gellar who puts to sleep the myth that her acting skills are confined to TV!

Extras:

* Filmmakers' Audio Commentary - Interesting and amusing, it adds to the film and package. Well worth listening to.

* 6 Deleted Scenes - Some deleted, some just extended scenes with intro's explaining why the scenes were cut or changed from the Director. The extended scenes actually seem to explain a few holes in the plot and still left us wondering why they weren't left in the film!

* Music Videos - 2 videos - Placebo and Marcy Playground. The Placebo one's not bad.

* Making-of Featurette - A five minute extended trailer with interviews with the cast and crew.

* Creative Intentions - A documentary on 'Finding a Visual Style'. An in-depth look at the visuals with comments from the costume and set designers. Not bad, with a running time of over 21 minutes.

* Theatrical Trailer

* Talent & Filmographies - Explains who the Director and Cast are in case you didn't know.

Our Verdict...

Not a classic by any means but enjoyable and surprisingly compelling. One for the teen audience. 6.5/10

Impressive looking throughout. Anamorphic too. 9/10

Not the type of film that's really going to test your sub but good use of the music soundtrack. Still, you think they could have slotted an explosion or two in.. 8/10

Excellent. A disc truly worthy of its 'Collectors Edition' title. The 'making-of' could have been enhanced though. 7/10
