Picture : 2.35:1 anamorphic, DD 5.1 & DTS, Single-Side Dual-Layer, Keep Case

The story:

Two cops on the trail of a brutal killer. They must see as one, they must act as one, they must think as one, before the next victim falls.

Best selling author and model cop, Lincoln Rhyme (Denzel Washington) is the New York Police Departments top forensic crime scene expert. Confined to a bed 24 hours a day and living in a near vegetative state since suffering an horrific accident 4 years ago, Rymes is paralysed and tired of living. But, when a spate of brutal and complex murders are uncovered by a street cop, Amelia Donaghy (Angelina Jolie), Rymes interest in the case gives him a renewed sense of vigour and a purpose for living. With the help of fellow cop, Paulie Sellitto (Ed O'Neill) he enlists Amelia to work as his assistant, to be his eyes and ears whilst he works the crime scenes of the case. What he uncovers is more sinister than he has ever encountered and he must use all the skills he has amassed to save himself and his young protégé.

The summary:

The best thrillers are the ones that keep you guessing, the ones that take unprecedented twists and turns toward an ending that kicks you straight in the teeth with its brilliance. Sadly the Bone Collector, whilst entertaining, is lacking in the story department. Great performances from Angelina Jolie and the always good, Denzel Washington cannot lift this film up beyond the averageness of its plot. At times it tries to mimic other films in its suspense but readily fails whilst trying to shock with its sometimes graphic scenes of mutilation. It is also very predictable and has some very worrying plot holes in places. On the plus side it is well directed and the film does flow along without too much trouble. The killings are plausible, with much time being devoted to the interesting "clues" left by the Bone Collector. The Dolby Digital sound mix is also worth a mention for its continued use of thunder storms and nicely atmospheric music.

Our Verdict...

Slightly self absorbed thriller that rely's on good performances from Washington and Jolie more than it does on pace and storyline. Predictable but very worth watching. 6/10

Clean and crisp with very detailed dark scenes. Mostly grain free with a subtle greyness from the dark look of the city streets.
9/10

In a city that seems to use police helicopters excessively and it never stops raining you would expect great 5.1 sound. That is exactly what you get!. 9/10

Once again Universal offer an extra packed feast. Trailers, a making of and an audio commentary compliment the film very well. Nice to see the DTS soundtrack included as well. 7/10
