The story:

The power of an immortal. The soul of a human. The heart of a hero.

Blade (Wesley Snipes) is half-human, half-vampire. A daywalker as other vampires call him. He possesses all the superhuman strength of a vampire but none of the weaknesses. When the vampire overlord Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff) declares war on humans, Blade steps in to confront his old foe once more. Years ago his mother was bitten by a vampire and Blade will not rest until he finds the vampire that gave him the taste for human blood.

The summary:

As vampire movies go, this surely rates as one of the best. From the stylish opening scene with it's trendy techno soundtrack you know that this film is trying hard to be unique in its genre. Action-packed to the extreme this will soon get your adrenaline pumping. You'll find yourself immersed in the cool martial arts based fight sequences and futuristic Bond-style gadgets. This whole film is skillfully directed by Stephen Norrington and takes a fresh comic book approach to the screenplay. Wesley Snipes gives a memorable performance as Blade - a true Superhero bad-ass that has the blood sucking vermin running for their teddies. Kristofferson, though always in Snipes' shadow, is good as Blades partner and considering his age, almost as cool. So, plenty to rave about in this film and a 10 out of 10 score then? Well not quite. I don't think the 'perfect' vampire movie has yet been made, though this is an extremely good effort. I'm in two minds over scoring it an 8 or 9, but after watching a second time I've plumped for the 8. It's still a marvelous film second time round, but perhaps the action masks the depth of the story.

A great DVD and even more surprising when you compare this to other region 2 releases. I near-perfect transfer to DVD and a good selection of extras including a 51 minutes 'behind the scenes' documentary. But (there's always a but!), the region 1 release contains all there extras and more, including a documentary on the origins of vampires and DVD-ROM extras.

Extras:

* La Magra - The alternate ending involving the final character, La Magra, or the Blood God as we like to call it. Spectacular ending and in widescreen but some of the effects are unfinished. 14 mins 8 secs.

* Designing Blade - This is a feature on the production design and special effects used in making Blade. A very well made feature and good value too, lasting 22 mins 32 secs.

* Cast and Crew - Usual cast profiles here then? Not at all, this is interviews with all the cast lasting approximately 10 mins.

* Theatrical Trailer - The trailer!

* Behind the Scenes - A short featurette showing some of the stunts and fight scenes. 5 mins 40 secs.

* Audio Commentary
