The story:

There's something about your first piece.

Comedy about four 'unlucky in love' high school friends, Jim, Finch, Oz and Gary who make the ultimate pact: they must lose their virginity by prom night! With time running out, the pals desperately try their luck with their classmates with often disastrous consequences. Follow the four in the run up to the prom as they learn about sex, women and apple pies!

The summary:

This film goes a long way to proving that you don't need big name stars to make a hit movie. The relatively unknown cast (though you'll know them by now) go though the cheap jokes and sexual innuendoes in this slickest teen comedy for years. They all look older than teens to me, but what the hell, they're convincing enough. This film has some great moments that'll make you laugh out loud - like the pint glass incident and THE apple pie scene! The humour does scrape the bottom of the barrel at times but when you do it with style, it's amazing what you can get away with. Eugene Levy, one of the few older cast members has some hilarious moments as he awkwardly attempts to teach his son some sex education with adult magazines! As you might have gathered, this is aimed at the 18-30 audience, or anyone else that remembers the good old 'playground humour'. It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea but if it sounds good so far, you wont be disappointed - this is one disc you'll watch again and again.

The DVD itself is absolutely top notch. With the film itself a little over an hour and a half, plenty of extras have been generously used as packing material. The commentary is very well done but the outtakes are a little disappointing considering the amount of fun the cast had making this. In all it's very well presented and with top picture and sound it makes this an essential purchase for the younger audience.

Extras:

* Spotlight On Location - A featurette with interviews with the cast and their views on prom nights, girls and the first time director/producer - Just over 10 mins.

* Feature Commentary - The director, producer, writer and cast get a real party atmosphere (with little in the way of a script) going in this amusing commentary. Well worth listening to.

* Outtakes - Disappointing. Just over two and a half minutes and not very funny. Crappy picture quality too.

* Universal Records Soundtrack Presentation - A shameless ad for the American Pie soundtrack and the "Tonic - You Wanted More" music video.

* Music Highlights - Jump to a music snippet from each chapter. Hmm..

* Classic Quotes - Same as above but with quotes from each chapter.

* Production Notes - Usual notes and lots of them!

* Cast and Filmmakers - A couple of pages on each cast member and the films they've starred in (just this one and Carrie 2 for a few!)

* Theatrical Trailer

* Universal Showcase - 2 trailers - "Man on the Moon" and "Snow Falling on Cedars".

* Reel Recommendations - 3 more trailers of some golden oldies - "Blues Brothers", "Animal House" and "American Graffiti"

* DVD-ROM Features - Including a 'behind-the-scenes', sound sound clips and interviews.

Our Verdict...

As good as they come for a teen comedy. Genuinely funny. 8/10

Bright and sharp and we couldn't ask for a lot more. 9/10

Ok'ish but with no effects to show off it's mainly just used for the indie music. 8/10

A good selection of extras but perhaps not the most comprehensive collection we've seen. 9/10
